Organic Cotton

Organic Cotton

At Fifth Column we fully endorse and actively promote the choice of organic cotton clothing and ethical printing processes. The range of organic cotton garments is big and getting bigger all the time with more brands starting to produce them. T-shirts, hoodies, lots more besides. They all offer advantages for people and the planet.

There is no getting away from it, responsibility for the environment means we need sustainable textiles. Eco-friendly fashion and organically produced materials not only have a part to play, they are here to stay. Cotton is one of the most commonly used fabrics in everyday life so no surprise that it is also widely used in the custom clothing and personalisation industry.

When it comes to printing and embroidery, organic is actually preferable to conventional. The softness of organic cotton feels great against the skin and it works better for print and embroidery processes. It also fits with our company values. Ethical printing includes the fashion we print. The bands and businesses we work with are increasingly of the same opinion. We all care about the earth and each other and strive to make decent decisions.

Organic Cotton | Ethical Printing

Cotton is one of the most extensively grown crops on earth. It’s been around for thousands of years. A truly versatile and practical fabric. Over time, cultivating the plant has come to involve the use of chemicals which cloud the air, seep into the ground and contaminate water supplies.

Growing cotton organically is an approach to farming which seeks to address these issues and ensure there is a sustainable tomorrow for one of our favourite textiles. With the added bonus that organic cotton is longer lasting and more comfortable than the conventional varieties. Less chance of chemical damage to threads during cultivation or the presence of trace pesticides.

We believe the future for personalised apparel and custom merchandise is closely linked to ethical printing and the use of sustainable fabrics. Being proud of the finished article starts with having high quality, environmentally acceptable base products.

That’s why we prefer organic cotton. Whether it be screen printing, DTG printing or embroidery. From harvest to garment maker and right onto the hanging rails and into our homes, organic is the right road to take.

There is a worldwide certification/standard for organic fibres – click here to learn more about the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Embroidery

You can’t screen print perfectly on every garment, and that’s when embroidery comes into its element. It’s a stunning way to showcase your logo on jackets, hats, bags and workwear – it’s particularly durable and looks and feels premium.

Direct-to-Garment Printing

For this method, the artwork is printed straight onto the garment using a specialized inkjet printer. As it’s a digital process, the result is a higher resolution image and sharper print. It’s a growing part of our business at Fifth Column.
