Sustainable Fashion
The concept of sustainable fashion developed as a response to ethical concerns both within and outside of the industry. Linked to the environmental movement, it grew out of a desire to create an approach which is more socially equitable and ecologically sound. You may have come across a number of similar terms. Circular fashion, eco fashion and green fashion, for example.
It clearly has an impact on us. Printing and embroidering custom clothing and merchandise starts with the garment or accessory and these are in turn influenced by fashion.
Like everyone else, Fifth Column are trying to juggle sometimes conflicting demands and find an ethical way through the maze of possibilities. We were born in the London punk era of the Seventies. That time spawned a way of thinking. Times change and we changed with them, but the outlook stayed with us. Fairness, equality and sustainability. Fifth Column are still here in London, doing what we started out doing. Printing t-shirts and taking blank merchandise and making it special.
Take a look at our catalogues page, we work with some great sustainable clothing brands like Neutral Certified Responsibility, Continental Clothing and Stanley Stella.
Sustainable Fashion | Ethical Printing
Sustainability is an increasingly important element in our industry. We print a wide range of items for an even wider range of customers and always try to meet high ethical standards in how we do it (click here to see our services).
Custom t-shirts and hoodies, bags and beanies, jackets and dresses. For bands and breweries, retail chains and corporate clients, promotional events and charitable causes. They all need quality products, expertly printed and embroidered, finished and delivered in a professional way.
The environment matters to them just as much as it does to the people who buy their products. At Fifth Column, we believe sustainable fashion has a big part to play in how we work. Now and in the future. It’s an obvious choice, morally right and more affordable into the bargain.
And sustainability in fashion encompasses more than the fabrics used for garments. Yes, the clothing itself is made from sustainably farmed crops and recycled materials, but in terms of fashion the picture is far broader.
Better Fashion
Sustainable fashion is bigger than customised merchandise or the materials used in the undecorated products. It is about the entire industry. Social and cultural factors, ecological and economic systems. We all wear clothes. Whether they are custom printed with the legend of our favourite band, embroidered with the logo of our employer, or plain and unadorned. Fashion is everywhere and sustainability is one of the ways of making it better.
Designing clothes and accessories made from materials which don’t have a detrimental effect on the planet. Styling them in ways which have timeless lines and enduring appeal. Producing them with minimum waste and making sure that any made can be recycled and reused. We are one of the UK’s leading custom printing and embroidery specialists and want to do our bit. When you deal with us, you know that sustainability is in the mix.

Embroidery
You can’t screen print perfectly on every garment, and that’s when embroidery comes into its element. It’s a stunning way to showcase your logo on jackets, hats, bags and workwear – it’s particularly durable and looks and feels premium.

For this method, the artwork is printed straight onto the garment using a specialized inkjet printer. As it’s a digital process, the result is a higher resolution image and sharper print. It’s a growing part of our business at Fifth Column.

After the printing is done, it’s time for the finishing touches to get your garments retail ready: custom labelling, hem tagging, poly bagging and applying stickers all help you put your mark on the product and make it look professional.
